16 Feb ZACK MCLAUGHLIN: light as a paper
HUGE SKILLS FOR TINY DETAILS
Imagine cutting a tiny feather out of paper with just a regular scissors – let’s say about half a centimeter or so in size.
Now think about how many feathers cover a bird’s entire body. You know where I’m going with this; now imagine cutting out an entire body’s worth of tiny paper feathers! By hand! One at a time!
It’s pretty insane, but this guy Zack Mclaughlin does it. And does it extremely well!
Seriously though, it’s mind blowing how he recreates such lightness and softness out of flat FLAT paper! So realistically!
HATCHING THE IDEA
NOT YOUR AVERAGE BIRD WATCHER
It started as a concept for his own children’s book; a little boy makes a paper bird lantern and flies away. Struggling to visualize ways to paint it, Zack finds himself building his very first sculptured bird. Yes, out of paper!
Artistically, this guy is inspired by the beauty of birds and the natural world, studying birds in flight and puzzling out how they would work in an interior space. Each bird is birthed into existence completely by hand with the love and passion of it’s creator in each feather, pose, and color scheme.
SHOW US HOW TO FLY
NOT A LOT OF STEPS,
BUT A LOT OF SKILL
These are the general steps; of course, there’s a bunch of tedious work and procedures and whatnot, but we’ll just refer to it as “skills.” Zack’s not only spending his time doing this for fun, he’s making birds for private buyers, stores/shops, and window displays all over the world! He’s also doing workshops, talks, and demonstrations. Woo woop!
Don’t worry, he’ll still make you a custom bird if you just ask – he’s a cool guy!
The bird’s body is the center foundation for the whole sculpture. Of course, you want to have a solid base and framework to build from. So what’s better than wood! (Also of the natural world, staying true to the inspo – see that)
Here’s the star of the show! Paaaaaper! It’s this flat plain paper (which origins stem back to trees – see that again, nature) that brings the bird to life. Eat feather perfectly hand cut to detail, adding softness to the sculpture.
Zack’s paint job is incredible! Such fine detail! Especially the birds that have gradient coloring, my gosh! He’s truly an artist, topping his masterpiece off with his skilled artistry to recreate an insanely realistic bird.
NOW, WE CAN BE AS
COOL AS ZACK
You want to know something pretty awesome? You can totally make a paper bird yourself! I mean, imagine having a paper bird sculpture and being able to say you made that yourself! Yah, amazing. I know. I want one. Ok, so basically, Zack is cool enough to give us a chance to be as cool as him! He offers Build Your Own Bird Kits via his website.
Seriously, now you know what to get me for Christmas. (Because I need to up my “cool” factor.)
