11 Apr LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES NATIONAL PARK: lagoons or desert in Brazil?
A CONFUSING KIND OF BEAUTY
This has to be one of the most gorgeously confusing places on earth. The clean white sand dunes, with pockets of vibrant blue (and sometimes green) lagoons, are so dreamy. Lying outside the Amazon Basin, these lagoons and sand dunes stretch out nearly 600 miles! That’s so many lagoon pockets! That’s so amazing! We’re talking Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil.
BUT LAGOON IN A DESERT?
What’s confusing about this place is the fact it looks like a desert full of lagoons. But guess what?! It’s not even a desert! It’s actually more exotic than that… it’s in freaking Brazil! Beside lush amazon rainforests…uh ok…mind trip.
BUT HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
Since it’s located near the Amazon Basin, there’s a lot of rainfall which starts early in the year. The rain collects in the sand valleys creating lagoons. The water collects on the surface due to an impermeable layer under the sand which prevents the water from percolating. The best times to see this spectacle is during July – September when the lagoons are at it’s fullest.
YES! There’s totally fish in there! In fact, people who live around the area work as fisherman during rainy season. Where the heck do the fish come from?! Amazingly, during the rainy season, the lagoons get so full they connect to each other and to nearby rivers like Rio Negro. And the fish come swimming over! There’s one species of fish that stays dormant in the mud once the lagoons evaporate, then come back out when the lagoons fill up again. Amazing!
